Justin Kastner, Ph.D.

Justin Kastner, Ph.D., is a professor of food safety and security in the College of Veterinary Medicine, teaching courses ranging from Trade and Agricultural Health to Human and Veterinary Public Health in the Age of Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Kastner has several degrees, including a B.S. from K-State, a Ph.D. from the University of Guelph, and an M.Sc. from London South Bank University. Dr. Kastner helped design Frontier Field Trips, which allow students to develop and apply their skills in historically important locations, such as the National Library of Medicine. His work focuses on the global food system, globalization, multidisciplinary thinking, public health history, veterinary history, and environmental health.

Victoria Neff, DVM, MPH
Victoria Neff, DVM, MPH, is a veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. She studied public health at Kansas State University and graduated with an MPH in August 2025.

Recently graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Medical Microbiology from Kansas State University and is currently an MD student at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Schieferecke has research experience in immunology, virology, and infectious disease, and is now exploring public health history. She intends to pursue a career in medicine where she is able to build connections and find improvements in health.

Ben Weigler, DVM, MPH, Ph.D., DACLAM, DACVPM
Ben Weigler, DVM, MPH, Ph.D., DACLAM, DACVPM, oversees the campus wide programs of animal welfare compliance, veterinary care, husbandry, and research support for animals used in teaching and research, and advisor to faculty programs in the appropriate and humane use of vertebrate animals to comply with university policies, federal laws, and contemporary standards of practice. He is a nationally recognized research expert in several areas, including zoonotic disease epidemiology, occupational health and safety in animal research environments, applied biostatistics, and animal welfare compliance.
