OLATHE — Kansas State University Olathe graduate Chrissy Zemencik is now the owner of Cake Loft, an Olathe-based business that has it all: cinnamon rolls, gourmet cookies, hot cocoa bombs.

“We are incredibly proud of Chrissy Zemencik, a graduate of our B.S. in Hospitality Management program, who has turned her passion for hospitality into a thriving business,” said Kimberly Voight, director of student services at K-State Olathe. “Her journey opening her bakery is a testament to her dedication, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. She embodies the excellence and ambition we strive to instill in all our students."

After graduating from Johnson County Community College with her associate’s degree in food and beverage management plus a certificate in baking and pastry, Zemencik continued on to K-State Olathe to earn her bachelor’s degree.

“I really enjoyed my time at K-State Olathe, making connections with other students, professors and industry professionals,” said Zemencik. “Being able to complete my degree while continuing to work played a role in my success today. Being in class with other working professionals in all aspects of the hospitality industry allowed me to learn and grow more than a traditional classroom setting.”

The hospitality management bachelor’s degree completion program at the Olathe campus is designed for learners who have completed two years of college at another institution, such as our partner, JCCC.

After graduating, Zemencik used the shared kitchen space on campus to continue to develop her products and to bake a variety of treats, including hot cocoa bombs.

The Food Innovation Accelerator at K-State Olathe provides local entrepreneurs with space to create and perfect their products. Anyone who is passionate and who has a great idea for business can benefit from using this space to scale up their business. The FIA, in combination with educational options, help fulfill K-State Olathe’s strategic mission of improving individual’s lives and promoting economic growth.

Now, Cake Loft has its own storefront in Olathe, and Zemencik’s business is growing. One of the biggest benefits? Shoppers can drop in and grab a cupcake or two without having to place a large order. Because Zemencik previously sold primarily custom orders, she built a large following and fan base in Olathe. Now those customers can stop by to get the same delicious treats but on a smaller scale.

“Cake Loft started as a big dream, and I have been lucky enough to have the outstanding support of the Kansas City community to get me where I am today,” said Zemencik. “This March, we will celebrate seven years in business, which is just crazy to me. We spent about a year and a half looking for a store front location, and finding this spot in Olathe just felt right. I've planted my roots down deep in the city, and I am excited to give back to the community that gave me so much growing up.”

With its new location, Cake Loft offers more than just tasty treats. Zemencik’s shop also offers cookie decorating classes. Learners who are interested in elevating their own baking abilities can attend public classes on March 16 or 17 to learn how to decorate St. Patrick’s Day cookies.

If you’re a local business looking for a team-building opportunity, Cake Loft also is available for corporate events.

“I am so excited to be able to share Cake Loft with more people than ever before, and I hope that when someone comes into the bakery, whether it's their first time or hundredth time, they see the passion and love in what I do and their day ends up a little bit sweeter,” said Zemencik.
