K-State Olathe graduate horticulture program readies to launch with first faculty hire

Kansas State University Olathe is launching a graduate-level program in horticulture and has hired the program's first faculty member. Eleni Pliakoni will be an assistant professor of urban food production and postharvest handling in the department of horticulture, forestry and recreation resources and will work on the Olathe campus, said Dan Richardson, K-State Olathe CEO.

There are few places where lava, tomato plants, Cajun food and face-painting rats come together for a fun-filled day, but Kansas State University Olathe’s open house is precisely that place. The All-University Open House gives the public and future students a chance to experience the university firsthand.
The open house will take place Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Olathe campus, 22201 W. Innovation Drive, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Salina and Manhattan campuses. The open house will offer hands-on demonstrations, entertainment, food, exhibits, tours and more.
Joan Leavens joins Urban Water Institute at Kansas State University Olathe

The Urban Water Institute at Kansas State University Olathe has a new program coordinator. Campus CEO Dan Richardson has named Joan Leavens to the position. She will begin Monday, March 4. Richardson said, "Joan's broad range of experience in education, water issues and local government will help advance the institute and position it as part of the university's 2025 plan to be a Top 50 public research institution."
'Righteous Among Nations' Holocaust exhibit on display through March 22 at K-State Olathe

The exhibit "Righteous Among the Nations: Help of Polish people for the Jewish population in southern Poland in the years 1939-1945" opens today at Kansas State University Olathe, 22201 W. Innovation Drive. The exhibit, which runs through March 22, is free and open to the public.

Kansas State University Olathe will team with the agronomy department at Kansas State University to present the second annual "Willie and the Beanstalk" event, a contest to grow the largest soybean plant. Open to elementary, middle school, high school, 4-H and/or FFA teams interested in the scientific principles surrounding plant growth, "Willie and the Beanstalk" is a challenge to grow the largest soybean plant in a 40-day span and document the effort, beginning March 4.
