Student Poster Session: Call for Abstracts

Scholarships awarded for each division

To inspire the next generation of scientists, doctors and veterinarians, high school and college students (undergraduate and graduate) are encouraged to present a research poster and compete for cash scholarships at the upcoming Kansas City One Health Day.

 

Registration is required to attend Kansas City One Health Day and to participate in the student poster competition. Registration is $15 and includes lunch.

Submit an Abstract

Kansas State University Olathe, BioNexus-KC, KU Medical Center and KU Edwards Campus are hosting a Kansas City One Health Day as part of International One Health Day on Nov. 7, 2025. College and high school students are invited to submit an abstract for a poster presentation.

As part of this event, students may compete for cash scholarship awards (high school: $200, undergraduate: $300 and graduate: $400) by presenting their research in person, whether it be from a bench, clinical or literature review experience, with projects from a previous competition allowed. Any One Health research topic is acceptable.

Mental Health is the theme for this year's KC One Health Day.

One Health topics might include, but are not limited to:

  • Pet therapy and mental health
  • Nature's impact on mental well-being
  • Climate change and mental health
  • Zoonotic disease and mental burden
  • Environmental toxins and brain health
  • Animal welfare and human psychology
  • Community One Health for mental health
  • Gut microbiome and mental health

Poster Competition Steps and Timeline

  1. Register to attend.
  2. Submit a title and abstract of no more than 250 words (with a One Health Day abstract subject line) - Deadline is Oct. 9, 2025.
    • Special notes:

      a. The primary abstract author must be in attendance. If this is not the first author of the poster, note who is first author as well as the presenting author. The presenting poster author and any other authors attending must be registered. A fee waiver will be provided to the presenting author.

      b. The student submitting the abstract must indicate educational level, high school, graduate level or undergraduate level.

  3. Review and notification of abstract acceptance sent no later than Oct. 24, 2025.
  4. Arrival, poster set-up and lunch for poster presenters: 10:45 - 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 7, 2025.
  5. Poster judging is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 7, 2025.
  6. Scholarship winners will be awarded at closing at 2:45 p.m.
    1. Winners will be expected to deliver a one-minute "elevator pitch" to the audience upon acceptance of their award.
    2. Poster presenters are expected to stay until the event ends.
  7. Posters can be dismantled and taken at the conclusion.

Poster Session

Poster Requirements
  • Posters should be no larger than 36" x 48" and can be a free-standing tri-fold or a flat printed poster (easels and flat poster boards will be available).
  • The posters may take the form of dry research (literature review) or wet research.
