This is a fully funded M.S./Ph.D. position in controlled environment agriculture with Teng Yang, Ph.D.

She is looking to hire a highly motivated and enthusiastic graduate student with a strong background in controlled environment agriculture (CEA) for Spring 2024. The student will join the M.S. in Horticulture with an emphasis in Urban Food Systems program at the Kansas State University Olathe campus. The project will involve conducting dynamic and innovative research programs that improve access to fresh produce in urban communities by increasing CEA crop production, quality, efficiency and sustainability. The candidate also is expected to collaborate with other programs at the K-State Olathe campus as well as the Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center. The exact topic will be determined according to the successful candidate's specific interests.

The position will provide stipend, tuition coverage, conference support and benefits. Preference for Ph.D. program will be given to candidates holding a master's degree.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct research in CEA, including sustainable production of specialty crops (vegetable, herb and/or fruit) in controlled environments using soilless media, hydroponics, aquaponics and other advanced technologies.
• Work collaboratively with other members of the research team to design experiments, collect and analyze data and prepare manuscripts for publication.
• Present research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
• Attend lab meetings and provide updates on progress.
• Assist with other related tasks as required.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in horticulture, plant science, agricultural/controlled environment or other closely aligned fields.
• Strong interest and aptitude in CEA and interdisciplinary research including postharvest technology, produce microbiology and food safety, consumer sensory and culinary activities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Experience with experimental design, data analysis and scientific writing preferred.
