The One Health concept has become widely recognized, nationally and internationally, over the past decade. Notably, the creation of a One Health High Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP) at the June 2021 G7 summit confirms its significance and provides political visibility to One Health
How did One Health come to be? For students starting their Master of Public Health (MPH) or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) programs, the term is used in classes, and its practical application is explained, but the history of One Health is often glossed over. The original Titans of One Health have been written about in numerous publications. However, for those dipping their academic toes into the ocean of One Health for the first time, Dr. Bruce Kaplan, co-founder of the One Health Initiative team, has compiled a brief history on the historical perspective of One Health (One Medicine-One Health, 2021).
The following article, first published in the One Health Initiative website’s online news section in 2021, outlines significant historical collaborative efforts between human medicine, veterinary medicine, researchers, and public health professionals to attain optimal health for people, animals, and the environment. It also highlights important figureheads within the One Health initiative. Historical reflection draws us closer to the heroes of the past who worked to improve the world we live in, while passing the torch to another generation of One Health professionals.
