Shabina Kavimandan, Ed.D, serves as the assistant professor of curriculum and instruction at Kansas State University and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee representative for the Olathe campus.
Kavimandan’s K-12 teaching experience includes both international and national experiences within elementary and secondary school settings. Her current research emphasis includes issues specific to teacher positionality, teacher agency, and various contextual factors such as home-school connections, literacy development through students’ and families’ linguistic competencies.
Additionally, Kavimandan has authored several books and articles for numerous nationally known journals. In addition to her research, she also teaches graduate level courses to teachers working on their ESOL endorsement and advises and mentors doctoral candidates in curriculum and instruction.
Kavimandan also has directed and managed several Title III National Professional Development projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She has presented at numerous conferences locally and nationally and continues to provide professional development to educators throughout Kansas on issues specific to bilingualism, translanguaging, multicultural literacy efforts and culturally responsive pedagogy.
Outside of her work at Kansas State University, Kavimandan currently serves on the board of Global Ties KC, which is a citizen diplomacy effort in Midwest leading to study abroad opportunities, youth exchanges and opportunities for our local communities to interact with other cultures through person-to-person interaction.
