ABOUT THE URBAN FOOD SYSTEMS INITIATIVE

A Multidisciplinary Initiative at Kansas State University

The Urban Food Systems Initiative, or UFSI, supported by the College of Agriculture and K-State Olathe, works to develop sustainable urban food systems that are inclusive, resilient, safe and diverse. Our goal is to integrate research, education and extension for sustainable urban food systems, leading to increased understanding of how to build and maintain successful systems that are equitable, conserve natural resources, strengthen communities, increase profitability, improve health outcomes and provide economic opportunities for farmers and the community as a whole in Kansas, the Midwest and beyond.

The Objectives of the UFSI are to:

Our objectives include:

  • Train the next generation of leaders and extension educators to facilitate successful, inclusive, resilient and diverse urban food systems.
  • Develop and disseminate extension programs and services that support urban food systems.
  • Expand transdisciplinary research through partnerships with growers and farmers.
  • Actively engage K-State faculty and external partners in transdisciplinary and urban food systems applied research, education and outreach.
