As program coordinator of the Urban Water Institute, Joan Leavens connects Kansas State University researchers with industry, government, and agency partners to institute innovative, long term, sustainable approaches to urban water management through research and development, education and training, technology transfer, and outreach.
Joan brings 20 years of experience in building government, industry, university, and non-profit partnerships to address environmental health issues and future workforce needs. Most recently she served as Integration/Outreach Leader for One Health Kansas, a project of Kansas State University funded by the Kansas Health Foundation.
Her work has been recognized with awards from the Missouri Environmental Education Association, Missouri Stream Teams, Kanza Sierra Club, Bridging the Gap and the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Joan holds a B.S. in elementary and early childhood education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is currently working toward an M.S. in Curriculum & Instruction at Kansas State University.
