Graduate Food Science program at K-State Olathe hires first faculty member, prepares for fall launch

Kansas State University Olathe's new graduate-level food science program, to be launched this fall, has its first faculty member. According to Jackie Spears, K-State Olathe associate dean, Sara Gragg will serve as an assistant professor of food science at K-State Olathe. The food science program is part of the university's department of animal sciences and industry in the College of Agriculture.

The workshop will be Aug. 19-23 on the K-State Olathe campus.

The American Royal Association is looking for America's best-tasting steak, and Kansas State University Olathe will help. The association's second annual American Royal Steak Competition will be at the K-State Olathe campus in September, with the winner announced at the 2013 Grapes & Steaks Competition on Oct. 9. Beef producers from across the nation are invited to submit rib-eye steaks to compete for the best-tasting steak.

Four finalists have been identified for the position of CEO and vice provost of the K-State Olathe campus. Provost and senior vice president April Mason said, "The pool was highly competitive and we look forward to learning more about each of these candidates when they visit our campuses in Olathe and Manhattan.” Public forums will be held May 20, 22, June 3 and 4 at K-State Olathe.

The American Royal recognized Marianne Swaney-Stueve, Kansas State University Olathe, as "Rookie of the Year" at the organization's annual dinner and awards ceremony recently in Kansas City. Stueve was recognized for her leadership on behalf of the Sensory and Consumer Research Center at K-State Olathe for the September steak competition held at the campus.

Kansas State University's Olathe campus and the Pathways to Public Health component of One Health Kansas are teaming up to offer a summer experience in public health for high school and college students.
The camp will be June 17-18, at K-State Olathe, 22201 W. Innovation Drive. High school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores are eligible to attend.

Kansas State University’s award-winning Master of Agribusiness (MAB) distance degree program is now offering an MAB tailored to individuals working in the animal health industry.
The Master of Agribusiness combines a master of business administration and a master’s in agricultural economics with a focus on professionals working in the animal health and agribusiness industries. The one-week “on-campus” portions of the program will be held at K-State Olathe in August and October of each year.

A Kansas State University Salina flight team and faculty will land at the Kansas State University Olathe campus, 22201 W. Innovation Drive, to offer an aviation summer youth camp July 15-17. The aviation fixation camp is open to students entering third through sixth grades this fall. Two sessions of the camp will be offered -- a morning session from 8 a.m. to noon and an afternoon session from 12:45 to 4:45 p.m. Registration cost is $70 prior to July 1, and $80 July 1 and after.

National Geographic-sponsored ultramarathoner West Hansen, who led the first expedition to paddle the length of the Amazon River from its newly discovered source, will discuss his journey, touching on the Amazon as a natural, cultural, and economic resource, from 4-5 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at Kansas State University Olathe, 22201 W. Innovation Drive.
His presentation, sponsored by the Urban Water Institute at K-State Olathe, is free and the public is invited.

Kansas State University Olathe is launching a graduate-level program in horticulture and has hired the program's first faculty member. Eleni Pliakoni will be an assistant professor of urban food production and postharvest handling in the department of horticulture, forestry and recreation resources and will work on the Olathe campus, said Dan Richardson, K-State Olathe CEO.
